Changing the way we travel
During the last 12 months we have been able to show that an increasing and significant number of visitors to Petersham Nurseries are choosing to travel by sustainable means. In fact 25% less customers travelled by car in 2008 than in 2007.
Our Travel Plan evidence and 2008 surveys suggest that:
• The 50% target in the approved travel plan (Travel Plan 2007) has already been achieved by the loss of 50% car parking spaces in 2007);
• 75% less cars are generated by Petersham Nurseries during peak periods than other garden centres of similar size, type and location;
• 54% less cars during the peak period when compared with March 2007 surveys (parked cars):
• At least 19% of Petersham Nurseries customers have been influenced to change their travel behaviour as a result of our Travel Plan.
We have also achieved the following Richmond Council approved travel objectives:
• 64% of visitors and customers travel sustainably with an additional 33% car sharing;
• 65% of café (restaurant) customers travel sustainably with 35% car sharing
• 79% of staff travels sustainably
• A large percentage (the majority) of customers are local – 37% and of these 78% walk.
Other points of note:
• Those staying at the site less than an hour are solely visiting the nursery or browsing. Those combining activities on site with a visit to the café/restaurant stay longer, suggesting the current mixed use activity is more sustainable by reducing the overall trips in and out of the site during an average day;
• 43% of all customers were already in the area visiting other attractions such as Ham House and the River Thames, 48% of cars were already in the area visiting these and other attractions.
