In addition to the plants we buy in from more specialist British growers, we also have home grown plants (in organic compost) of more unusual seasonal herbaceous, biennial and annual cultivars. |
Early Summer in the Garden
In June the garden reaches as tumult of growth and opulence filled with roses, peonies, lavender and spectacular herbaceous plants such as delphiniums, lupins and hollhocks.
Careful planting can extend the season, look out for montbretras (crocosmias), knifphofias, schizostylis, heleniums, rudbeckias amongst others yet to come.
Good 'long players' include hybrid hardy geraniums such as G. 'Ann FoLkard', G.'Patricia', dahlias and penstemons.
The herb garden still looks well, but be prepared to shear lavenders back after flowering. This serves to both lenghten the life of the plant and to keep in within bounds. Some varieties may reflower, such as Lavandula Hidcote.
Most, if not all, of these plants are currently available at the Nursery.
Garden Tasks for September
* Traditionally September is the time you should be assessing your lawn and formulating a plan carrying out any major renovations or improvements throughout the autumn
* Cut back perennials past their best, and divide the overgrown plants
* Hoe off weeds in dry weather. If done when wet, the weeds are liable to re-root.
* Continue to water veg crops and harvest when ready
* Harvest early fruits
* Force hyacinth and narcissi bulbs for Christmas
* September is one of the best months for planting as the soil remains warm so the roots of plants put in now will have time to settle before the onset of winter
* Collect seeds, lay them out to dry, then store them in labelled envelopes
